Funded PhD opportunity – Satoyama Reconnections

The CCRI at the University of Gloucestershire is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic individual to this funded doctoral studentship which is part of a wider project with the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature (Japan), a number of european institutions, and case study partner, Dartmoor National Park Authority (UK).

Funding comprises fees and stipend set at UKRI levels.

This PhD is based in the UK with a particular focus on Dartmoor, but it represents one of six Satoconn cases (with others in Sweden, Switzerland, Portugal and Japan), to be mobilised within a process of comparative development and analysis over the next four years.

It will involve conducting action-oriented research using a multi-actor ‘Living Lab’ approach embedded in communities of practice. The aim in Satoconn is to repurpose and strengthen the SEPL in Dartmoor by identifying and experimenting with new market, policy and/or institutional routes to increase resilience and promote new climate and nature-positive outcomes, partnering with local actors and longstanding local knowledge.

The student will work as part of a team focused on investigating the interconnections between land management, nature and culture, including the social capital among commoners and other groups; the sustainable economic regeneration of farming businesses and communities; and decision-making and governance of the rich cultural landscape of Dartmoor, which has seen significant conflict and tension in recent years.

The studentship provides an excellent opportunity for the student to upskill in transdisciplinary methods and comparative work with a research community that spans continents, enabling some international travel to Europe and Japan as the project develops. In this way the student will increase their knowledge about local, national and international environmental, land use and climate policy and governance.

Closes 8 January 2025
