Rural Climathon

Resources and links to support you in organising a Climathon in your local community.

What is a Climathon?

The Climathon methodology was originally developed for cities, led by Climate-KIC . Climathons are a way to get people involved in local climate action. During a short, intense period of collaboration, you will work in teams to develop solutions that work for your local community.

Although the Climathon itself takes place over a short period, there is a lot of lead-in and follow-up work for organisers! This toolkit aims to guide you through the process so you can deliver the best event possible, and have fun doing it.

When you download the toolkit, we will ask you for some information to help us understand how this resource is being used.

Who are we?

We are a team of researchers based at University of Gloucestershire and Newcastle University. Between 2022 and 2025, we have been developing the method and organizing Climathons in rural areas, addressing topics such as food and farming, home heating, and transport.

As you will be aware, rural areas face specific decarbonisation challenges, and solutions designed in cities don’t always deal with these effectively. The ethos behind a Climathon is for people with local knowledge to work together to develop solutions that work in their unique context.
