Monitoring & Evaluation for Culture Nature England Project

The evaluation, commissioned by Natural England and Libraries Connected, looked at the Culture Nature programme, which funded 26 library services across England to run nature connection activities. These ranged from guided walks and virtual reality experiences to nature-rich library gardens and local history projects exploring landscapes.

Dr Demelza Jones led the evaluation alongside Dr Alice Goodenough (CCRI) and EAP Research Consultancy. Through a mix of national survey data and case studies, the team found that using libraries (trusted, accessible, and inclusive spaces) helped reach individuals and communities who might otherwise struggle to engage with nature due to cost, location, mobility, or social isolation.

Participants reported improved wellbeing and stronger connections with nature, while library staff saw new opportunities to build similar programmes into their services.

To mark Green Libraries Week, the final report and accompanying film by Unit 1 Productions are now available to view online.
