Funded by the BBSRC, this project explores how perennial biomass crops could be more effectively and sustainably integrated into farming systems in the UK as part of the transition to net zero. As demand for land intensifies — driven by climate targets, food production, biodiversity goals and infrastructure needs — there is a growing need to rethink how biomass crops are deployed so they complement, rather than compete with, other land uses.
Consulting farmers, land managers and key stakeholders, the research focuses on identifying practical, socially acceptable and economically viable strategies to integrate biomass crops at both farm and landscape scales, which will combine biomass production with environmental benefits such as carbon storage, flood mitigation and biodiversity.
By taking a collaborative approach, the project aims to identify future-facing strategies that support resilient farm businesses, align with emerging public and private funding mechanisms, and contribute to climate goals while respecting local contexts and priorities.
Taking place over 9 months from July 2025, this project is led by Prof. Julie Ingram and involves Dr Jane Mills & Dr Natasha Stonebridge.
