Ocean Literacy in Wales: 2026 Survey

Participant Information Sheet

About the survey

The Countryside and Community Research Institute (CCRI), University of Gloucestershire have been commissioned by Natural Resources Wales (NRW) to conduct a survey in Wales about your experiences and views about the marine environment.

Who are the CCRI?

The CCRI, within the University of Gloucestershire, is a specialist rural research institute working at the interface of agriculture, society and the environment. Learn more about the institute here: http://www.ccri.ac.uk/about-the-ccri/

Why am I being asked to participate?

The survey – known as the Ocean Literacy survey – was run in Wales (and England) in 2022 and we are now repeating it in Wales. The overall aim of the survey is to collect data that tells us about how members of the public engage with and think about the marine environment. Understanding this means we can think about ways to improve and safeguard the marine environment for everyone to enjoy.

What do we mean by marine environment?

We define marine life as the wider ocean, seas, coasts, and estuaries and also include all aspects of marine wildlife and plants, marine habitats and ecosystems and marine heritage (so that’s things like shipwrecks).

Who can participate?

Anyone aged 16 and over who currently lives in Wales.

What do I have to do?

To participate, you would need to fill out the online survey. The questions are mainly tick box ones. It is not a test, so please answer openly and honestly.

If I participate, what is my survey data going to be used for?

The survey data will be analysed and written into a report for Natural Resources Wales. The report will be publicly available. We may also produce summaries of the work and potentially peer reviewed (academic) papers.

How will the data be analysed?

Most of the data will be analysed using statistical analysis methods.

Some open-ended responses may be analysed using computer-assisted analysis tools, including qualitative data analysis software (such as NVivo) and AI-supported text analysis tools (such as ChatGPT). These tools will be used to help identify common themes and patterns across responses. AI tools will support, but not replace, human analysis, and all findings will be reviewed and interpreted by the research team. Responses will not be used to identify individuals, and no personal or identifiable information will be intentionally entered into AI systems.

Will I be identifiable in the reports or papers?

Survey responses will be anonymously reported. This means that no one would be able to tell you participated or link the responses back to you. Most survey responses will be presented as percentages or figures so you would not be identifiable from this.

Where you can give us an open response (i.e. words instead of numbers) it is your responsibility to not include any identifiable data. If you accidentally gave us some personal data in those responses, don’t worry, they would never be used in any reporting.

We do ask for your full postcode as part of the survey. This is only used to explore whether people from certain areas hold certain views compared to other areas but individual postcodes would not be presented in the project report.

Will we share the survey data with anyone?

The data we have collected (including postcode) will be handed over to Natural Resources Wales (who funded this work) at the end of the project. You will not be identifiable from the data we send to Natural Resources Wales.

Do I have to take part?

No. It is entirely up to you whether you decide to participate. If you decide not to participate this will not be made known to anyone.

What are the possible benefits of participation?

Your input will help us understand how people across Wales use, experience and value the marine environment. Understanding this can help inform ways to improve and safeguard the marine environment for everyone to enjoy.

Are there any risks?

We don’t think there are any significant risks from participating in the survey. Some of the questions touch on issues such as climate change and we also ask about your (physical and mental) health but we don’t anticipate you’ll find particularly challenging to think about. If you are likely to find these topics difficult then you may wish to think about participating or not.

Another risk is being identifiable in any reporting. Because the CCRI won’t receive your name or email address, we are confident this is very unlikely. If you were to tell us any potentially identifiable data in your responses to open questions, we would never use them in any reporting.

Can I change my mind?

Yes.

You can withdraw from the survey process at any time during the survey by simply exiting your browser, and your responses up until that point will be deleted.

You have 10 days from the day you submitted the survey to withdraw your response. You will be asked to create a memorable code when you complete the survey. This will be made up of a memorable word and number (you’ll be guided though this at the end of the survey). If you wish to withdraw after submission, you will need to email oceanliteracy@glos.ac.uk, quoting your memorable code. We will use the code to identify you and delete your response. You do not have to give a reason for withdrawing your data from the survey.

Who has reviewed this research for ethical clearance?

The survey has been approved by the University of Gloucestershire Research Ethics Committee and steps have been taken to ensure the survey fully complies with the necessary personal data management procedures in place at the University (more info: https://www.glos.ac.uk/research/research-ethics).

What if I have any questions / concerns?

Please email the research team oceanliteracy@glos.ac.uk.

If you have any concerns or complaints, please contact the University of Gloucestershire CCRI Lead (ccriethics@glos.ac.uk) or University Ethics Chair (Dr Matt Reed, mreed@glos.ac.uk).
