The CCRI today (1st September) welcomes Dr Julie Urquhart to the team as a Senior Research Fellow.
Julie is an environmental social scientist with a research interest in exploring human-environment relationships in order to understand how people relate to and value nature and how this can inform natural resource management and environmental policy.
She graduated from the CCRI in 2010 after completing her PhD, which explored the opportunities for enhancing public benefits from private forests and woodland. Since then, Julie has worked for Forest Research, the University of Greenwich and Imperial College London. Recent work has involved place-based approaches for understanding cultural ecosystem services in the context of small-scale fisheries and she was co-investigator on the €4.6 million ERDF co-financed Interreg IVA project GIFS, the Geography of Inshore Fishing and Sustainability, as well as TourFish, a partnership of 6 European institutions that explored how added value could be delivered through responsible tourism associated with food and small-scale fisheries.
Most recently, Julie has worked at Imperial College London as a lead researcher on the LWEC Tree Health & Plant Biosecurity Initiative (THAPBI) project UNPICK, which investigated how UK publics understand and perceive the growing threats to tree health from invasive pests and diseases.
Julie has co-edited a book, which is due to be published on 8th September 2017. The book is entitled ‘Social Wellbeing and the Values of Small-Scale Fisheries’ and is the first book length application of the social wellbeing approach to small-scale fisheries. It shows that social and cultural values are at least as important, if not more so, than economic considerations in fisher and non-fisher assessments of the contributions of small-scale fisheries and promises to stimulate debate and further research about how to measure the contributions of small-scale fisheries. It has been published as part of the MARE (Centre for Maritime Research) book series. The book is also available as an e-book.
