We have just announced details of two more free events that we are running as part of the ESRC Festival of Social Science this year.
A team of CCRI researchers are setting up stalls at the Cheltenham and Cirencester farmers’ markets (on 10th and 11th November respectively) to give short talks and chat with members of the public about our latest food and farming research and how it affects the products we buy.
The events, which will be streamed on social media, are aimed at the general public and themes such as cheese, milk, beer, fish, water and the environment will be up for lively and friendly discussion. Other topics up for discussion will include how to use natural flood management to reduce the risk of flooding in the local area, how products travel from farm to table, and the importance of soil for healthy food production
People will also have the unique opportunity to see a demonstration of a smartphone app, which is being developed by a CCRI research team to help people access local food. Leading this research is our Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellowship scholar, Marco Della Gala , who was awarded funding by the EU Horizon programme for a training-through-research project called ‘SOFIA – Situated Learning Opportunities (SLOs) fostered by ICT applications in Alternative Agro-Food Networks’.
Dr Matt Reed is leading the events and said:
“We are delighted to take part in the ESRC Festival, which provides us with an opportunity to share some of our research with the public and demonstrate how it can affect their everyday lives. We will be running stalls at both Cheltenham and Cirencester farmers’ markets with a different range of themes available each day. The events are free and aimed at all ages, with a life-sized cardboard cow and balloons to keep the younger ones interested.”
Our researchers are also running an event called ‘From Moo to You’ at Asda in Bruton Way, Gloucester, on 6th November where they will provide an interactive introduction as to how milk gets to supermarket shelves, taking you through the journey that milk makes from farm to shop and showing how social science plays a key role in understanding and responding to dairy farming issues, such as supply and price volatility.
