What is the purpose of the study?
This study is being conducted by the Countryside and Community Research Institute (CCRI) at the University of Gloucestershire, on behalf of the Welsh Government.
The aim of the study is to better understand the value of recreational sea bass angling in Wales, including its economic, social, and cultural importance. In particular, the survey will collect information about participation in sea bass angling, associated expenditure, and the benefits anglers gain from taking part. The findings will help inform future fisheries management and policy development in Wales.
Why have I been invited and what will participation involve?
You have been invited because of your experience of recreational sea bass angling. You must be over the age of 18 years (including 18 years old) to take part in the research.
Participation involves completing an online questionnaire, which should take approximately 15 minutes to complete. The survey includes questions about:
- Your participation in recreational sea bass angling in Wales
- Spending associated with your angling activities
- The benefits and values you derive from taking part in fishing
- Your views and experiences as a sea bass angler
As a thank you for taking part, respondents who complete the survey will have the opportunity to enter a prize draw to win £100 in vouchers for an angling store of their choice. Entry into the prize draw is optional and will be administered separately from survey responses to maintain anonymity.
Do I have to take part and can I withdraw?
No. Participation is entirely voluntary. You are free to:
- Decide not to take part
- Skip questions you do not wish to answer (please note: a small number of questions are mandatory for the purposes of study eligibility and directing respondents to the correct questions)
- Exit the survey at any time before submission
If you decide to withdraw your survey responses after submission, you may do so by contacting Dr Adam Fisher (afisher9@glos.ac.uk) within 30 days of submitting your responses.
After this point, survey responses may have been anonymised and incorporated into the analysis, and it may no longer be possible to identify and remove your individual responses.
How will my data be used and processed?
We will not collect or retain any personal data beyond what is necessary to carry out this research. Personal data (such as contact details provided for the prize draw) will be used solely for the purposes of administering the prize draw and will not be linked to your survey responses.
All information provided will be treated confidentially. The questions offer little opportunity for the identification of individuals; we generally do not ask for information that could be used to identify individuals. None-the-less, survey responses will be reviewed and anonymised during analysis so that individual participants cannot be identified.
The anonymised data will be analysed and used to produce aggregated findings. These findings will be reported as part of a study commissioned by the Welsh Government and may also be shared with relevant public stakeholders, such as the Angling Trust and other organisations with an interest in recreational fisheries and fisheries management. Findings may also be included in publicly available reports and academic outputs, such as peer-reviewed journal articles.
No individuals will be identifiable in any reports, publications, presentations, or other outputs resulting from this research.
Upon project completion (2027), the data will be given to Welsh Government ONLY; you will not be identifiable in that data.
How will my data be stored and for how long?
All data will be handled in accordance with UK GDPR and University of Gloucestershire data protection policies. Alongside the description of how we will treat your data given in this participant information statement, during the research phase, we also conform the University of Gloucestershire’s research participants privacy notice, which can be accessed by clicking here. University of Gloucestershire data protection policies can be accessed by clicking here. Key data handling storage protocols are shown below.
- Data will be stored securely on University of Gloucestershire OneDrive and on password-protected computers (where possible stored in locked facilities)
- Access to data will be restricted to the research team
- Survey responses will be stored separately from any contact information collected for the prize draw.
- Contact details collected for the prize draw will be deleted once the prize draw has been completed.
- Personal data will be securely stored in accordance with University GDPR policies and procedures.
- Anonymised research data may be retained for up to 5 years for research, reporting and audit purposes.
As previously mentioned, the data collection is being commissioned by Welsh Government, therefore it is also subject to their privacy statement, which can be accessed by clicking here. We ask that you read both statement prior to completing the research.
Are there any risks?
There are no significant risks anticipated from taking part in this study. The survey focuses on your experiences and participation in recreational sea bass angling and is not expected to involve sensitive or distressing topics. You are free to skip any questions that you do not wish to answer and may stop completing the survey at any time before submitting your responses.
What are the benefits?
There are no direct benefits to participants. However, your input will contribute to improving understanding of the economic, social and cultural value of recreational sea bass angling and help inform future fisheries management and policy in Wales.
Participants who complete the survey will also have the opportunity to enter a prize draw to win £100 in vouchers for an angling store of their choice.
Who has reviewed this research for ethical clearance?
The survey has been approved by the University of Gloucestershire Research Ethics Committee and steps have been taken to ensure the survey fully complies with the necessary personal data management procedures in place at the University (more info: https://www.glos.ac.uk/research/research-ethics).

Teitl y prosiect: Asesu gwerth cymdeithasol, economaidd a diwylliannol pysgota hamdden am ddraenog y môr yng Nghymru.
Beth yw pwrpas yr astudiaeth?
Cynhelir yr astudiaeth hon gan y Countryside and Community Research Institute (CCRI) ym Mhrifysgol Swydd Gaerloyw, ar ran Llywodraeth Cymru.
Nod yr astudiaeth yw deall yn well werth pysgota hamdden am ddraenog y môr yng Nghymru, gan gynnwys ei bwysigrwydd economaidd, cymdeithasol a diwylliannol. Yn benodol, bydd yr arolwg yn casglu gwybodaeth am gymryd rhan mewn pysgota am ddraenog y môr, y gwariant cysylltiedig, a’r manteision y mae pysgotwyr yn eu cael o gymryd rhan. Bydd y canfyddiadau yn helpu i lywio rheolaeth pysgodfeydd a datblygu polisi yn y dyfodol yng Nghymru.
Pam y cefais wahoddiad, a beth fydd cymryd rhan yn ei olygu?
Rydych wedi cael gwahoddiad oherwydd eich profiad o bysgota draenog y môr hamdden. Rhaid i chi fod dros 18 oed (gan gynnwys 18 oed) i gymryd rhan yn yr ymchwil.
Mae cymryd rhan yn cynnwys cwblhau holiadur ar-lein, a ddylai gymryd tua 15 munud i’w gwblhau. Mae’r arolwg yn cynnwys cwestiynau am:
- Eich cyfranogiad mewn pysgota hamdden am ddraenog y môr yng Nghymru
- Gwariant sy’n gysylltiedig â’ch gweithgareddau pysgota a’ch ymweliadau â Chymru
- Y manteision a’r gwerthoedd rydych chi’n eu cael o gymryd rhan mewn pysgota
- Eich barn a’ch profiadau fel pysgotwr sy’n pysgota am ddraenog y môr
Fel arwydd o ddiolch am gymryd rhan, bydd ymatebwyr sy’n cwblhau’r arolwg yn cael cyfle i gymryd rhan mewn raffl i ennill talebau gwerth £100 ar gyfer siop bysgota o’u dewis. Mae cyfanswm o bum taleb gwerth £100 ar gael i’w hennill. Mae cymryd rhan yn y raffl yn ddewisol, a bydd y broses yn cael ei rheoli ar wahân i ymatebion yr arolwg er mwyn sicrhau anhysbysrwydd.
Oes rhaid i mi gymryd rhan, ac a alla i dynnu’n ôl?
Na. Mae cymryd rhan yn gwbl wirfoddol. Rydych chi’n rhydd i:
- Penderfynu peidio â chymryd rhan
- Hepgor cwestiynau nad ydych am eu hateb (nodwch: mae nifer bach o gwestiynau yn orfodol er mwyn pennu a ydych yn gymwys ar gyfer yr astudiaeth, ac i gyfeirio ymatebwyr at y cwestiynau cywir)
- Gadael yr arolwg ar unrhyw adeg cyn ei gyflwyno
Os penderfynwch dynnu eich ymatebion i’r arolwg yn ôl ar ôl eu cyflwyno, gallwch wneud hynny drwy gysylltu â Dr Adam Fisher (afisher9@glos.ac.uk) o fewn 30 diwrnod i gyflwyno eich ymatebion.
Ar ôl y pwynt hwn, efallai bod ymatebion i’r arolwg wedi’u hanonymeiddio a’u cynnwys yn y dadansoddiad, ac efallai na fydd yn bosibl mwyach nodi a dileu eich ymatebion unigol.
Sut y caiff fy nata ei ddefnyddio a’i brosesu?
Ni fyddwn yn casglu na chadw unrhyw ddata personol y tu hwnt i’r hyn sy’n angenrheidiol i gynnal yr ymchwil hwn. Defnyddir data personol (megis manylion cyswllt a ddarperir ar gyfer y raffl gwobrau) at ddibenion gweinyddu’r raffl yn unig ac ni fydd yn gysylltiedig â’ch ymatebion i’r arolwg.
Bydd yr holl wybodaeth a ddarperir yn cael ei thrin yn gyfrinachol. Ychydig iawn o gyfle sydd yn y cwestiynau i adnabod unigolion; yn gyffredinol nid ydym yn gofyn am wybodaeth y gellid ei defnyddio i adnabod unigolion. Serch hynny, bydd ymatebion yr arolwg yn cael eu hadolygu a’u hanonymeiddio yn ystod y dadansoddiad fel na ellir adnabod cyfranogwyr unigol.
Bydd y data wedi’i anonymeiddio yn cael ei ddadansoddi a’i ddefnyddio i gynhyrchu canfyddiadau cyfanredol. Bydd y canfyddiadau hyn yn cael eu hadrodd fel rhan o astudiaeth a gomisiynwyd gan Lywodraeth Cymru a gellir eu rhannu hefyd â rhanddeiliaid cyhoeddus perthnasol, fel yr Ymddiriedolaeth Bysgota a sefydliadau eraill sydd â diddordeb mewn pysgodfeydd hamdden a rheoli pysgodfeydd. Gellir cynnwys canfyddiadau hefyd mewn adroddiadau sydd ar gael yn gyhoeddus ac allbynnau academaidd, fel erthyglau cyfnodolion a adolygwyd gan gymheiriaid.
Ni fydd unrhyw unigolion yn adnabyddadwy mewn unrhyw adroddiadau, cyhoeddiadau, cyflwyniadau, nac allbynnau eraill sy’n deillio o’r ymchwil hwn.
Ar ôl cwblhau’r prosiect (2027), rhoddir y data i Lywodraeth Cymru YN UNIG; ni fydd modd eich adnabod yn y data hwnnw.
Sut y caiff fy nata ei storio, a pha mor hir?
Bydd yr holl ddata yn cael ei drin yn unol â GDPR y DU a pholisïau diogelu data Prifysgol Swydd Gaerloyw. Yn ogystal â’r disgrifiad o sut y byddwn yn trin eich data – a ddarperir yn y datganiad gwybodaeth i gyfranogwyr hwn – rydym hefyd yn cydymffurfio â hysbysiad preifatrwydd Prifysgol Swydd Gaerloyw ar gyfer cyfranogwyr ymchwil yn ystod y cyfnod ymchwil; gallwch gael mynediad ato drwy glicio yma. Gellir gweld polisïau diogelu data Prifysgol Swydd Gaerloyw drwy glicio yma. Nodir y prif brotocolau ar gyfer trin a storio data isod.
- Bydd data yn cael ei storio’n ddiogel ar OneDrive Prifysgol Swydd Gaerloyw ac ar gyfrifiaduron wedi’u diogelu gan gyfrinair (lle bo’n bosibl wedi’u storio mewn cyfleusterau dan glo)
- Bydd mynediad i ddata yn gyfyngedig i’r tîm ymchwil
- Bydd ymatebion yr arolwg yn cael eu storio ar wahân i unrhyw wybodaeth gyswllt a gesglir ar gyfer y raffl gwobrau.
- Bydd manylion cyswllt a gesglir ar gyfer y raffl gwobrau yn cael eu dileu unwaith y bydd y raffl gwobrau wedi’i chwblhau.
- Bydd data personol yn cael ei storio’n ddiogel yn unol â pholisïau a gweithdrefnau GDPR y Brifysgol.
- Gellir cadw data ymchwil dienw am hyd at 5 mlynedd at ddibenion ymchwil, adrodd ac archwilio.
Fel y crybwyllwyd eisoes, mae’r broses o gasglu data yn cael ei chomisiynu gan Lywodraeth Cymru; felly, mae hefyd yn ddarostyngedig i’w datganiad preifatrwydd, y gellir ei gyrchu drwy glicio yma. Gofynnwn i chi ddarllen y ddau ddatganiad cyn cwblhau’r gwaith ymchwil.
A oes unrhyw risgiau?
Ni ragwelir unrhyw risgiau sylweddol o gymryd rhan yn yr astudiaeth hon. Mae’r arolwg yn canolbwyntio ar eich profiadau a’ch cyfranogiad mewn pysgota draenog y môr hamdden, ac ni ddisgwylir iddo ymdrin â phynciau sensitif neu destunau a allai achosi trallod. Mae croeso i chi hepgor unrhyw gwestiynau nad ydych am eu hateb, a gallwch roi’r gorau i lenwi’r arolwg ar unrhyw adeg cyn cyflwyno eich ymatebion.
Beth yw’r buddion?
Nid oes unrhyw fuddion uniongyrchol i’r cyfranogwyr. Fodd bynnag, bydd eich cyfraniad yn helpu i wella dealltwriaeth o werth economaidd, cymdeithasol a diwylliannol pysgota draenog y môr hamdden, ac yn helpu i lywio rheolaeth a pholisi pysgodfeydd yn y dyfodol yng Nghymru.
Bydd cyfranogwyr sy’n cwblhau’r arolwg yn cael cyfle i gymryd rhan mewn raffl i ennill £100 mewn talebau ar gyfer siop bysgota o’u dewis.
Pwy sydd wedi adolygu’r ymchwil hwn ar gyfer cymeradwyaeth foesegol?
Mae’r arolwg wedi’i gymeradwyo gan Bwyllgor Moeseg Ymchwil Prifysgol Swydd Gaerloyw ac mae camau wedi’u cymryd i sicrhau bod yr arolwg yn cydymffurfio’n llawn â’r gweithdrefnau rheoli data personol angenrheidiol sydd ar waith yn y Brifysgol (mwy o wybodaeth: https://www.glos.ac.uk/research/research-ethics).
